Motivation Profiles of Student Teachers: A Person-Centered Study to Guide Program Awareness and Improvement
We investigated patterns of relationships among teacher candidates’ motivation-related perceptions in their final semester of student teaching. Cluster analysis yielded a 5-cluster solution based on 6 factors related to motivation: cost, ability beliefs, utility value, interest value, autonomy, and preference for autonomy. Data analysis revealed patterns of generally high levels of motivation for participants from a teacher preparation program characterized as large, geographically dispersed, and highly structured. This paper expands person-centered research on motivation at the student teaching level by providing a closer examination of the emerging 5 motivation profiles while concluding with next steps in utilizing this approach in continuous program improvement.
